NEWS & UPCOMING PROJECTS

~After taking a break during my MFA, I’m returning to acting! I’m playing Associate Pastor Joshua in THE CHRISTIANS by Lucas Hnath at Cardinal Stage. It plays 10/18-11/4/2018 in Bloomington.

It’s a powerful drama about faith and leadership that’s had dozens of productions across the country. It treats people of faith in a way that’s rare in the theatre community, while still crafting a compelling story for any audience member, regardless of their relationship to faith/religion.

Over the past twenty years, Pastor Paul has successfully presided over the growth of his church from a few dozen people to several thousand strong. He’s respected and admired, but when a personal revelation leads him down a new path, will his congregants follow him? The Christians is a riveting drama about the complicated fallout when personal faith clashes with institutional doctrine.

“…this terrific play about the mystery of faith by Lucas Hnath — one of the freshest playwriting voices to emerge in the past five years — is MESMERIZING.”  – The New York Times

“…a powerful, riveting production that handles a complex and intellectual debate in a relatable way…” – National Catholic Reporter

~In the Fall of 2018, I’m teaching a Saturday acting class series for Stages Bloomington (including teaching Shakespeare to teenagers), and a Monday evening scene study class for Cardinal Stage.

RECENT PROJECTS & NEWS

~I directed CHURCH & STATE by Jason Odell Williams for the Jewish Theatre of Bloomington, May 10-20, 2018.  It's a timely political drama dealing with big issues facing our country.

Three days before his bid for re-election in North Carolina, a Republican senator makes an off-the-cuff remark to a blogger that calls into question his belief in God.  As his devoutly Christian wife and his liberal Jewish campaign manager try to contain the damage, this look at how religion, guns, and social media influence our political system is simultaneously funny, heartbreaking and uplifting.

"Gripping entertainment!  Simply superb!".....Los Angeles Times
"A crackling script! I wish every member of Congress could see it!".....NPR

~I directed THE RESISTIBLE RISE OF ARTURO UI by Bertolt Brecht for IU Theatre last December for my MFA thesis.  A cast of 13 women and 2 men allowed for lots of cross-gender casting, including a female Arturo Ui.  It was the first Brecht the department had done in 20 years.  I wanted a big juicy story for my thesis, and I got it!  I'm so proud of my cast and design team.

~For the second summer in a row I taught and directed for Stages Bloomington's 2018 summer camp this past June.  For the first camp, I taught a collaborative group playwriting class for both camps, and then directed them in their own show. I led them to create an original play as a group based around the theme of each camp (“Salute to the Sea” for the younger kids, and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” for the older campers). For the second camp, I directed an adaptation of ANDROCLES & THE LION written by legendary children’s theatre playwright Aurand Harris. Harris’ version drew heavily on the stock characters and plot elements of commedia dell’arte, which the kids really responded to. So many cartoon characters they watch on TV are direct descendants of commedia characters, so they really took to the exercises I led them through.
